Migraine: A birds eye view

What Migraine is??

Migraine is a complex disorder characterised by recurrent episode of severe headache which
is most oftenly unilaterally(Only one side)
and may be associated with visual or sensory
symptoms which is known as an "AURA" that occurs before the head pain or it may also occur during or after.


How to conform that it is Migraine:-

  • Throbbing or Pulsatile severe headache.
  • Headache increased by physical activity or movement.
  • Headache last for 4-72 hours.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Sensitivity to Light and sound.
  • Temporary loss of vision.
  • Appearance of colourful circles in front of eyes.



Intresting fact:-
  • It affect more to female than male.
  • Peak age for experiencing migraine are between 25-55 years.
  • Migraine may have a genetic link.
  • 90% of migraine patients are unable to function or work normally during migraine episode.
  • 10% of school age children experience migraines.

AYURVEDA AND MIGRAINE

In Ayurveda "Ardhavbhedaka" is Described by Charaka Samhita in sidhhi sthana (9/74-78).
Charaka explain Ardhavbhedaka as cutting and churning type of pain in the half part of head,ears,eyes and forehead.
So we can compare Ardhavbhedaka with Migraine.
Charaka also mentioned that if headache is very severe than it may Diminished the power of vision and hearing.
Treatment course is decided by evaluating the history of patients and according to individual's prakriti.

Formulations Described in Classical text:-

  • Shiroshuladi vajra rasa
  • Ardha narishwar rasa
  • Maha lakshmivilas rasa
  • Shadbindu taila
  • Apmarga taila
  • Pathyadi kashaya
  • Godanti bhasma



Herbs used in Migraine:-
  • Shirisha (Albizia lebbeck)
  • Yastimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
  • Vidanga (Embelia ribes)
  • Tilam (Sesamum indicum)
  • Bhrungraj(Eclipta alba)


Nasya in Migraine:-

Nasya treatment in Ayurveda refers to a therapy that includes installation of Herbal oils,jucie or powers through the nasal route. It works good in disorders of ear,Nose,Head and throat. Nasya is one among the Panchkarma therapy in Ayurveda.

Classical Nasya formulations:-
  • Powder of  Yastimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) with honey.
  • Juice of Root and fruit of Shirisha(Albizia lebbeck).
  • Equal quantity of vidanga(Embelia ribes) and tilam(Sesamum indicum) is crushed with water and used as nasya.
  • Juice of Bhrungraj(Eclipta alba) mixed with goat milk.
